African Penguin
The African Penguin, also called the Black Footed Penguin, can only be found on the southern coast of Africa, they live nowhere else in the world. These penguins are known for the odd donkey-like sounds they use to communicate with each other. Completely black from head to tail along their back, each penguin has unique black markings in the form of spots and stripes on their white belly. This coloring helps to camouflage these penguins while swimming through the water hunting for small fish and squid to feed on.
As with many birds, African Penguins mate for life. Breeding can occur any time of the year but usually takes place in early February, resulting in two eggs being incubated by both parents for up to a month and a half before hatching. The fluffy gray chicks are cared for by their parents for up to nine months before the young start living on their own.
The population of these penguins has been declining sharply in recent years, due in part to over-fishing affecting their food source. Other contributing factors are the commercial removal of the guano they burrow into to build their nests and that the eggs were considered a delicacy as little as fifty years ago.
American Badger

The noticeable dorsal stripe drawn from nose to head is the most distinct feature of the American Badger. The dorsal stripe is usually a line of white fur against a brown or black coat that covers the rest of a Badger's stocky, flat body. Besides the famous stripe, an American Badger also displays a sharply contrasting pattern of facial markings along either side of its head. Badgers also possess sharp, strong claws that are used for both predatory hunting and digging burrows.
Despite the first impression of a Badger's adorable face, they are actually fierce predators, feasting upon a diet of mostly small rodents, birds, and reptiles. A Badger's burrow serves a variety of a Badger's daily needs, including sleep, storage, and protection. American Badger burrows can be found across the Western half of the United States, most commonly in open, flat areas. Upon threat from predators, Badgers may hide inside their burrows to escape, and sometimes release an undesirable smell to ward predators off. When directly attacked, a Badger's thick fur acts as shielding from the predator's jaws, allowing the Badger to escape or defend itself before the predator is able to inflict much damage. So beware; Badgers may be perceived as cute and cuddly, but they're much more ferocious than they appear!

American Cocker Spaniel Dog
American Cocker Spaniels are medium-sized dogs that have long, curly, silky pelts and a short tail. Their most distinguishing features are their short nose and their long, feathery ears that hang almost to the ground. Their fur colors can come in any solid colors, black and tan, and combinations of white and color. They can grow up to 15 inches in height and weigh up to 30 pounds. These beautiful dogs can live up to 15 years, relatively old for a dog species. Along with the American Cocker Spaniel, there is also an older, English breed.
Cocker Spaniels originated in England, and the American breed was bred from the English one. They make wonderful pets and are known for their sweet, merry personality. Most Cocker Spaniels are very cute, playful, cheerful, and energetic. Cocker Spaniels need to go on long walks every day to make sure they stay healthy and happy because they love exercise. These dogs make great companions and are very loyal and social.

American Flamingo
6 species of Flamingos are known worldwide, including the American Flamingo, also known as Greater or Caribbean. Very long-lived birds recorded at 30 to 50 years, they can fly, but seldom do. Their distinctive bright pink feather color comes from high levels of Beta Carotene in their diet derived primarily from brine shrimp (yes, Sea Monkeys, lol). The coloration takes 3 years to fully develop in chicks, who initially feather out white or grey. Flamingos stamp their feet to startle small animals in mud to the surface - filter-feeders like most whales, Flamingos have a screen of hairs inside their beak like a whale's baleen to sift food from the water.
They mate only during the rainy season, and in dry years may not mate at all. Excellent parents, often the entire colony will participate in raising chicks. Unlike most birds, flamingos feed their chicks milk they produce in their upper digestive tract (rather in their crop like pigeons) instead of regurgitated food. The milk of Flamingos contains a greater fat level and less protein than pigeon crop milk, and therefore is a higher-energy food. Despite leaving the nest at about 10 days, young Flamingos continue to feed only on this milk for about two months, while their special beak hairs develop.
Very nearly the tallest bird at up to 5 feet, Flamingos are far from the heaviest, weighing only 5 or 6 pounds. They are also a very old species - thought to have evolved over 30 million years ago - and with relatively few predators, are not considered endangered.
American Paint Horse

# 211452
The American Paint horse is a distinct breed of horse, not to be confused with the Pinto. Pintos have similar colorings as the Paint, but can be any breed of horse. The Paint breed is descended from horses brought here by the Spanish conquistadors that escaped to join wild herds. Both the Native Americans and cowboys revered this horse for its strength, agility and intelligence. These horses are still used on farms working with livestock today. They tend to be stocky and well-muscled for a light horse, with an elegant neck and head.
Paint horses can be any color with the characteristic white markings. While there is a wide variety of unique markings, they are divided into three coat patterns. Tobiano have white legs, rounded white markings on the body but no more than the normal blaze or snip on the face. Also their tail is typically two colors. Overo look similar but there are differences, their white markings tend to be jagged and irregular on body and do not cross the horse's back. At least one, sometimes more legs are colored and their tail is one color. The face of the overo paint has much more white than the tobiano, sometimes covering the entire head. Then there's the tovero, which has a combination of both coat types. Tovero tend to be mostly white, with the color around the ears and eyes and large chest and/or flank spots. Typically one or both eyes are blue. Even with such a diversity of colors and markings, the one thing they all have in common is they are beautiful horses.

A beautiful and majestic raptor, the Bald Eagle has been a National symbol of the United States since 1782. An imposing bird, these eagles have a wingspan six and eight feet wide and weigh between ten and fourteen pounds. Both genders have dark brown feathers all over with the exception of the white feathers covering their head and neck, from which their name originates. Their tail feathers are also white, their beaks and feet bright yellow.
Great hunters, bald eagles will swoop down and pull fish right out of the water. Because fish is their preferred food, these eagles are almost always found along coastlines, lakes or rivers. Even though it's their favored prey, they don't limit their diet to just fish, they will sometimes catch small mammals or even eat carrion when available.
Bald eagles mate for life and both parents share the responsibilities of nest building, incubation and baby care. The nests these eagles assemble are among the largest in the world. A pair will usually have a clutch of one to three eggs that they incubate for thirty five days before the eaglets hatch. The babies stay in the nest, cared for by their parents until their fluffy down is replaced by feathers and they can begin to learn to fly. Young eagles are all dark; their distinctive white feathers don't grow in until the bird is around five years old.

Perhaps the Barn Owl is most easily able to spot out for its heart shaped facial disc that is white with somewhat of a brown-tinged edge. Its coat is usually light grey with darker lines with paler spotted markings that adorn the feathers. Located on the wings and back are markings known as buff markings and just under their white wings a few black spots are usually found, though occasionally there are none.
Unfortunately, Barn Owls do not tend to lead a very long life, and many of them die within their first short year or two of living. However, these owls can be found all over the world besides Antarctica, and can be found flourishing within virtually all habitats. They live mostly in open woodland, heaths and moors, rather than largly forested places. Like most of their kind, they are nocturnal and roost (or sleep) by day in the hollows of trees, caves, out-buildings, and even thick foliage.
Barn Owls are a worldwide group of birds, and are most commonly thought of for the simple fact of their fondness to sleep in old churches and barns. Though they have been known for a long period of time, the first official description of this magnificent bird was by an Italian naturalist, Givanni Scopoli, in 1769. The Barn Owl has many names, some of which include, but are not limited to, the Monkey-faced Owl, Ghost Owl, Night Owl, and even White Owl, which comes from the name Tyto Alba, alba literally meaning White.
These flyers truly are one of the many majestic creatures of the Avian kingdom.

The Birman Cat, being quickly noticed due to its fluffy and regal pelt, is also known as the Sacred Cat of Burma. A female and male Birman Cat were both shipped as a pair from Burma to France. Unfortunately, the male Birman Cat passed away on the trip; however, the female Birman was already pregnant at this time. The Birman breed went under many hardships until it was recognized by the United States CFA as an official cat breed in 1967. To this day, the Birman Cat is known for its temperament and attractive appearance to cat lovers everywhere.
The Birman Cat, being a very loyal breed of cat, is a very social animal. They love to be with their owners and can even adjust to their schedule in order to spend more time with them. They are also very intelligent, and can learn to use their litter box at a very early stage in their life.

The Capybara is the largest rodent in the world. They are found in the wilds of South America. Their name is thought to come from the Guarani word: "kapiyva" meaning "Master of the Grasses", but interestingly enough their scientific name means "Water Hog". The latter seems more appropriate, as Capybara' s are semi aquatic in nature and love to swim. They even have webbed skin between their toes to aid them in their watery lifestyle. Capybaras are herbivores, eating a diet that consists solely of vegetation, tree bark and sometimes fruit. The world' s largest rodent lives in groups of ten or more animals. They often have large litters, of at least four babies being common. This isn' t very surprising, considering smaller rodents normally have large litters. In their homeland Capybara' s are harvested for their skin and meat. Some people even farm them like livestock. But as of late these Rodent' s have become popular in the pet trade. They are a high maintenance exotic pet and in some places it is against the law to own one. Please be responsible in your pet choices, especially if you decide you' d like to have one of the world' s largest rodents in your backyard.

The clown fish' s starring role was in Finding Nemo where little Nemo is caught by scuba divers along the Great Coral Reef and father Marvin goes searches desperately for his kidnapped son. They' ve become quite popular pets among salt water fish owners. But a wild Clown fish lives in the tentacles of a Sea Anemone. After an Anemone paraylzes and eats a fish, the Clown fish will eat the scraps left behind. The Clown fish also keeps the Anemone free of dead tentacles by eating them. The Clown fish' s bright coloration often lures other fish into the Anemone' s reach where it then traps and devours the unsuspecting fish.
An interesting fact of the Clown fish is that it can switch genders. Therefore, if a female Clown fish were to die, the pre-dominant male could morph into a female and choose a partner from a non-mating male. When Clown Fish are born, they are all male. As the grow the pre-dominant male will morph into a female and become the primary defender of the territory.
Mated Clown fish hold a strong bond. They lay their eggs in large batches along coral or a rock adjacent to their Anemone home. Both parents guard the eggs for 3-5 days and once the eggs hatch the male may stay to care for the young until they reach sexual maturity.

The European Hamster, also known as the Black-bellied Hamster or the Common Hamster, is a small rodent that is widespread throughout much of Europe and is also found in Russia and kazakhstan. They prefer to live in dry, sandy soil that allows for optimal burrowing, but they will also live in all types of grassy and cultivated land. Considered a farmland pest by some, these creatures have even been trapped for their fur during times; however, they are still a thriving species across Europe as a whole despite being endangered in individual European countries.
These rodents are nocturnal species that are primarly active during dusk, nighttime, and dawn. They live mostly alone but in complex burrow systems beneath the ground that serve for both protection from predators and food storage. They primarly feed on seeds, legumes, and root vegetables, but occassionally they will also eat grasses and even insects. They will transport food in their elastic-like cheek pouches to their dens for storage, which contain surprisingly large amount of food for a European Hamster's size-- some dens ahve been found holding a total of 65 g of food. European Hamsters will hibernate between October and March, although they wake periodically to feed on sustenance from their storage chambers. In the months between April and August, female hamsters will have litters ranging from four to twelve in number.
European Hamsters have mostly brown or tan fur on their backs, and often have white splotches scattered at random on their fur. Like some of their names suggest, they have black fur on their bellies and chests. European Hamsters have short but furred tails, and long whiskers that allow them to detect objects in the dark. They are much larger than their counterparts, the Syrian and dwarf hamsters, weighing anywhere between half a pound to a pound and growing to be up to fourteen inches long. One major characteristic of this species is their large, inflatable cheeks: when filled with food, their cheek pouches can extend beyond their shoulder blades.
Common Raccoon
#374550
Common Raccoons are most identifiable by the dark bands striping their sweeping tails and the mask that darkens their features. They have a pointy muzzle with a dark nose, along with pearly white whiskers. Raccoons usually weigh in from 7 to 20 pounds depending on their age and gender.
Raccoons are probably most widely known for their scavenging habits which occur during the nighttime. Their night vision allows for them to continue to hunt for food and nutrition during the night. Raccoons can eat nearly anything; most Raccoons that live in more urban areas get their nutrition from human garbage. However, Raccoons can also eat insects, carrion, fish, nuts, rodents, and more.
In the daytime, Raccoons sleep in the warmth of a den or in the safety of a tree. They are nocturnal and rest when it's light outside. Raccoons are solitary creatures and only group with fellow Raccoons when it's nearing breeding season.

The desert was not the place to be if a creature was not use to the climates. It was unusually hot year-round without water for miles unless one was willing to dig deep into the roots of the wild plants growing there. If you were lucky enough to make it through the desert, on the other end was a special type of sand dune which hosted several different buildings and homes created solidly out of sand. Here lived a few other animals but the main citizens were known as Desert Dune Cats. These cats are magical beings, capable of living in the harsh conditions of the deserts. Their attire protects them from the heat and sandstorms. Among this breed is a rare cat, or an "outcast". Instead of the usual stripes, it has small leopard-type spots and the colors. The attire also differs.

The Eastern Bearded Dragon are natively from Eastern Australia where they live in open forests, heathlands, scrub, or even farmland. The main requirement for this reptile is a lot of trees which they use as a means of escape as well as for sunbathing or to even survey their territory. When there are limited trees they have been known to use fence posts as an alternative where they can jump to catch an insect or chase off intruding bearded dragons.
The majority of an Eastern Bearded Dragon' s diet is vegetable matter (80-90%). This includes leaves, fruits, berries, and flowers. Insects are the majority in a juvenile' s diet, but consist of the remaining percentages for an adult.
Spring is mating season for these dragons, a male will keep a close look-out for any passing females. Then to attract the females attention it will do a series of arm waving as well as head bobbing. A month after mating the female lays 10-20 white oval-shaped eggs that are flexible and soft. These eggs are nestled in a shallow hole in an open sunny spot, the eggs covered by soil. After about two months of incubation the eggs begin to hatch. A single female can produce 2-3 clutches worth of eggs in a good season.
Eastern Bearded Dragons are docile reptiles that would rather flee from a dangerous situation than attack. Usually when snuck up on they first freeze before puffing up their beards and opening their mouths wide to reveal the bright yellow lining. If they are picked up they would struggle over biting. They are usually grey-brown in coloration and extend to about 55cm.

Quick and lively creatures, chipmunks are small members of the squirrel family. Their pudgy cheeks, large shining eyes, "racing" stripes, and graceful tails have made them a favorite among animators, and landed them a series of starring roles in Hollywood. Of the 25 known species of chipmunks, all but one, Asia's Tamias sibiricus, are found in North America. The Eastern Chipmunk, along with the Least, are the smallest of the chipmunk family. While not social with their own species, Eastern Chipmunks cheerfully coexist with humans and can be tamed as pets. An interesting biological oddity is the fact that they have an extra set of incisors (front teeth).
Ranging from Canada to Mexico, Eastern Chipmunks are generally seen scampering through the undergrowth of a variety of environments from alpine forests to shrubby deserts to suburban back yards. Some dig burrows to live in, complete with tunnels and chambers, while others make their homes in nests, bushes, or logs. Chipmunks generally gather food on the ground in areas with underbrush, rocks, and logs, where they can hide from predators like hawks, foxes, coyotes, weasels, and snakes. They feed on insects, nuts, berries, seeds, fruit, and grains, which they stuff into their generous cheek pouches and carry to their burrow or nest to store. Chipmunks do not truly hibernate, but go into a very deep sleep from which they rouse periodically to dip into their caches of nuts and seeds throughout the winter.
For the most part, New World chipmunks, although susceptible to forest fragmentation, are not currently threatened. As their agricultural depredations are minor, and they do not have their larger cousin the squirrel's destructive habits if they gain entry to a human dwelling, they have never been considered a pest species in the United States.

The Great Horned owl's name comes from the feather tufts on its head, which resemble horns or ears. These owls are typically reddish-brown with lighter undersides and black bars on their feathers but they can be dark brown or even gray. Another very noticeable trait of these birds is their large bright yellow eyes, which can be a little disconcerting when they stare right at you. One of the larger owls, they can have a wingspan of three to almost five feet and weigh around three to five pounds. Females are larger than males but male vocalization tends to be deeper.
Just like most owls, Great Horned are nocturnal, becoming active at dusk. They have a wide variety of calls, including the recognizable 'hoo hoo hooooo' that most people associate with owls. These owls hunt a large variety of prey and will eat almost anything they can catch, from rodents and rabbits to other birds to frogs and toads. Great Horned owls are strong enough to carry off prey that's twice its size, even other owls aren't safe from these fierce hunters.
Nesting season starts in the winter, usually January into February. They don't build their own nests, they tend to use old nest of other birds or tree hollows. The females lay between one and four eggs which hatch in about a month's time. Both parents are very protective of their young, attacking anyone and anything that gets too close to their nest. The young start flying at 9-10 weeks old and stay around their parents' territory until fall before going off to find their own.

Little Red lived with her grandmother in the depths of the woods, there her grandmother could keep her safe and protected for every full moon did this innocent young lady became something so ferocious and deadly known as the Wolf. Her grandmother forces her to wear the cape, telling her stories of how it kept her protected from the evil of the woods. No, Little Red did not like obeying her grandmother, thus, many nights would Little Red sneak out without her cape. On the nights of the full moon, without her cape, she turns into this beast. The Luna Lionfish may get its name from its fierce hunting habits or possibly from the beautiful fins that frame their head like a mane, but whatever the reason it's a stunning creature. These fish have thirteen pectoral fin rays on each side with v-shaped markings on them that makes them instantly recognizable. Their scales are pale when young and become darker and spotted as the fish matures. The Luna Lionfish is sometimes mistaken for the Russell's Lionfish but can be identified by scales with pale centers in the dark bands, which form an almost net-like pattern on their bodies.
These fish are found in subtropical waters in the Indo-Pacific area of the ocean. They prefer shallower water to the deep ocean and like rocky or reef areas where they can hide and hunt for smaller fish and crustaceans. Territorial and solitary for most of their lives, Luna Lionfish will aggressively drive off other fish that approach their homes, even if the invader is the same species. Typically the only time two or more Lionfish are found together is when spawning, which produces thousands of eggs. These eggs hatch in only a day and half and grow quickly.
Despite having venomous dorsal fins, these fish are caught and used as food by the people in the regions they are found. Neither the use as food nor the collecting of specimens for aquariums seems to effect the population of this beautiful fish at all.

One of North America's largest and most beautiful insects, the Luna Moth, like most winged insects, undergoes a complete metamorphosis, with a larva (caterpillar) hatching from one of the 200 eggs laid by a fertilized female, eating its fill of deciduous tree leaves (deciduous trees are the broadleafed type that lose their leaves in the winter) and then spinning a cocoon of silk and leaf bits. Within forms a thin, horny brown pupa case that spends the winter dormant and developing.
In the growing warmth of Springtime, the moth becomes active and breaks out of its pupa and cocoon to dry its 3 to 4 inch iridescent pale green wings with their long, elegant tails in ths dimness of dusk, as they are nocturnal flyers. Adult Luna Moths have no mouths - they do not eat, but live only for a week - just long enough to mate and lay another batch of eggs for next year.

The Quetzal is truly a magnificent bird. These brightly plumaged fliers are native to the tropical rainforests of Central America. They are omnivores, with a diet consisting of both fruits and insects. Both the male and female birds have vibrant feathers, but males tend to have brighter plumage. Males also sport long tails during breeding season to help in attracting the right mate. Quetzal breeding pairs work together to raise a family. First they select a rotted tree, then they carve out a nest with their powerful beak. Next the female lays two or three blue eggs. Finally they take turns sitting on them until the eggs hatch. The Resplendent Quetzal is honored with a place on the Republic of Guatemala' s coat of arms. Not only that, but Guatemalan currency is also called a Quetzal, most likely because the Mayan people used Quetzal feathers as a form of their own currency. Sadly these beautiful birds are currently listed as threatened. Humans trap and kill them for their beautiful feathers. But ultimately it is the destruction of their natural habitat that is to blame for the decline of the species.

Whether called Mountain Lion, Puma, Cougar, Catamount, or American Panther, this glorious big cat once ranged most of the continental US and Canada. Bounty hunting reduced their numbers alarmingly in the past, but have recently began to make a gradual comeback, with the increasing deer herds providing them a diet that does not intrude on human domestic animals.
With a body ranging from 3 to 5 feet - plus another 3 feet of tail - and a body weight from 75 to 150 pounds, this king of American beasts maintains a territory as large as 100 square miles in the case of males - females generally have a territory of approximately 30-60 square miles. Mountain lions can live at both sea level and up to 10,000 feet. Adult mountain lions generally are a solid red or brown color - this permits them great camouflage while stalking their prey in the desert, through mountainous regions and in forests - and their ears and tails generally have black tips. Mountain lion kittens look very different from adults, with black and brown spots covering their bodies and rings around their tails. These designs disappear as they age. Mountain Lions live for approximately 8-10 years in the wild, and can live up to 20 years in captivity, with proper nutrition : female mountain lions breed for their first time between 1 1/2 and 3 years, and she and her litter live together until the kittens are old enough to survive on their own. Cub mortality is high - only 1 in 6 survive to weaning.
They are solitary and shy animals, seldom seen by humans. While they do occasionally attack people-usually children or solitary adults-statistics show that, on average, there are only four attacks and one human fatality each year in all of the U.S. and Canada - you have a better chance of being struck by lightning than dying because of a mountain lion attack.

The name swan conveys thoughts of beauty and grace and the Mute Swan is no exception, as a lovely bird with pure white feathers. They are also large birds, with a wingspan of over six feet and weighing 25-30 lbs. They can be told apart from North American swans by their bills which are orange colored and have a knob at the base. Mute swans are usually quiet, but adults will make snorting or hissing noises if necessary.
Like most aquatic birds, these swans eat mostly vegetation found under the water. They do not dive, they use their long necks to stretch below the water to reach far below the surface to reach plants deeper than ducks can reach. While they consume a large amount of plants, they will occasionally snatch up a fish or frog.
Breeding happens in the springtime, the swans either build nests or find a suitable mound in preparation. Their nests are large and lined with feathers and down to make a soft bed for the eggs. The female will usually lay between five and seven eggs that hatch after about five weeks. These swans are very protective of their nests, attacking animals and even humans that come too close. The chicks are brownish gray when hatched and slowly turn white over the next year. One parent, usually the male will take the chick to the water almost immediately after hatching. The babies can swim and will sometimes ride on their parents' backs in the water, but they don't learn to fly until they're about two months old.
