Halloween 2018
You stand at the entrance to Crestback Forest, pumpkin-shaped bag in one hand and lantern in the other. It’s Halloween and your small house on the edge of the forest is too far from your neighbors for any meaningful candy gathering. To maximize your sugar-to-time ratio you have to travel to the city, which means going through the woods next to your house. It’s a trail you take several times a year and know well enough, though you usually go during the day. Even so, something seems a little odd about the woods tonight. It’s dusk, but there are usually still birds calling, and the insects aren’t chirping as loudly as most nights. There’s a bite in the wind that you don’t remember being there the night before.

You shake off your nervousness. You’re just letting the darkness unsettle you. Of course it’s colder than usual; it’s autumn. It must just be too cold for the forest creatures and they settled down early. You aren’t scared. Not even a little. You picture the lights and narrow, winding streets of the city and square your feet. It’s candy time.

Before you the path snakes under the trees, heading south. Behind you your small wooden house sits on the side of a hill, windows dark.

Enter the forest

>>Go home

Halloween 2018
You return to your house. Your home is a one room cabin with a stove, a bed, and a table. There is a trap door leading down to the cellar, where you store food for the winter. You have candles throughout your home but they are not lit -your house is made of wood, after all. On the wall is an artist’s depiction of your family.

Halloween 2018
You walk over to the bed but don’t get in. It looks like a regular bed, but underneath is a bottle of Old Hargrove’s Patented Monster Repellent ™. You know that monsters don’t really exist, but you were scarred permanently as child after your older brother hid a live scrufflus underneath your bed one night.

You stand at the entrance to Crestback Forest, pumpkin-shaped bag in one hand and lantern in the other. It’s even darker than when you first set out to leave.

Before you the path snakes under the trees. Behind you your small wooden house sits on the side of a hill, windows dark.

Go home

>>Enter the forest

The path closest to your house is well-maintained and only a few roots break up the path. Your lantern lights up the forest around you and you can easily see where you're going. You continue on for a while until the path forks – one veers to the east and one to the west. To the north is the path back to your house.

You can’t quite remember which one goes where…

>>Go East

You take the path that goes to the east. This path quickly narrows and is overgrown with small bushes. You are still able to pass, though you aren’t sure that this is the correct way.

Continue east
Go west

>>Continue east

You continue on, even though the path has become more and more treacherous. You trip over many rocks and roots, and stumble through bushes. Finally the path opens up into a small clearing. There are multiple regularly-spaced vertical stones sticking out of the earth. The path you came from goes back to the west.

Enter the clearing
Go west

>>Enter the clearing

You enter the clearing and inspect the stones. As you approach you see that they are grave markers. They are all quite weathered and overgrown with moss and lichens. There are a few with writing carved into them, but the text is too eroded to read.

At the edge of the clearing, you see a small, flickering light.

Investigate
Leave the clearing

>>Investigate

You cautiously cross the grave yard and approach the head stone on the far side of the clearing. You can clearly see that it is very old and crumbling because someone has placed half a dozen lit candles around it. Sitting right before it on the ground is a deer skull. It appears fresh, and though most of the muscle and connective tissue has been scraped off some still remains attached. The exposed bone is stained with blood and has odd symbols carved into it.

Leave the clearing

>>Leave the clearing

Whatever the odd skull and candles are, you decide it is best to not touch them and return the way you came.

You turn away from the clearing and walk along the narrow and overgrown path, trying not to trip over roots. Soon it becomes slightly less difficult to traverse.

Go east
Continue west

>>Go east

You return to the clearing. The flickering lights of the candles have been blown out by the wind, and hopefully not due to some other creepy reason.

Leave the clearing

>>Leave the clearing
>>Continue west

You return to the fork in the path. One branch veers east and the other veers west. To the north is the path back to your house.

Go East
Go West
Go North

>>Go West

You take the western fork and continue on your way. For a while the path remains open and easy to traverse, but then the plants begin to encroach closer and closer, and the tree branches hang lower over your head. Soon you are tearing through thorny vines and climbing over fallen logs.

You don't remember the path being this difficult the last time you came through here, and wonder if you've somehow ended up on the wrong trail. You recognize an oddly shaped tree that you remember having seen before, however—it has a branch that looks just like an Ash Dragon's head—and reason that it must be the right trail. Maybe there was a storm that knocked some trees down.

Eventually you come to what appears to be a wall of vines with oddly large flowers.

Pull the vines down and continue on
Go back

>>Go back(沒有變化)
>>Go West

You take the western fork again. This time you have an easier time hiking along the trail as you know the best paths to take over all the obstacles blocking your way.

Eventually you come to what appears to be a wall of vines with oddly large flowers.

Pull the vines down and continue on
Go back

>>Pull the vines down and continue on

You start to pull the vines down, looking for a place where you can climb through. They are very thick but flexible, and you are able to make a little headway. Out of the corner of your eye you see some movement and stop for a moment. It appears that one of the large yellow flowers moved. It was probably just you pulling on a vine it was attached to though.

Keep pulling
Go back

>>Keep pulling

You continue trying to tear down the vines. You grasp the thinnest one, hoping it will be the easiest to tear, and yank on it as hard as you can. Suddenly there is a horrible, deafening snarl and the soil beneath your feet bulges. A large vine dragon explodes out of the ground, saliva streaming from its snapping mouth and a crazed, hungry gleam in its eye.

Run

>>Run

You sprint away from the angry dragon as fast as your legs can carry you. Compared to a dragon, that's not very fast.

Keep running

>>Keep running

Just when you think you can't run any further you realize you can no longer hear the vine dragon chasing you down. Luckily for you the forest is too thick for something of its size to easily move. Unluckily for you, in your panic you left the path completely behind and are now standing in the middle of the woods. You hold your lantern up and squint into the darkness for some sign of the trail.

Eat your apple
Cry
Go onward

>>Eat your apple

You take a moment to eat the apple you brought. You feel slightly better about the whole almost-being-eaten-by-a-dragon thing.

Cry
Go onward

>>Cry

You take a moment to cry about being lost in the woods. It is certainly less than optimal.

Go onward

>>Go onward

You decide to bravely continue onward because at this point you don't have many other options. You start walking in the direction with the least undergrowth. The trees start to become larger and spaced farther apart. After a while you reach a very old, gnarled tree with branches low enough to climb.

Climb the tree
Go onward

>>Go onward

You march onward, despite the fact that you have no idea of where you are or where you're headed. You're a trail blazer, taking the road never traveled.

You carry on congratulating yourself for a while until you realize that you are standing ankle-deep in stagnant, slimy water. After taking a closer look at your surroundings, you find that you are standing at the edge of a swamp. A large, warty toad on a nearby log eyes you and croaks at you questioningly.

Despite your deep and abiding love for wetlands and the valuable biological services they provide to us all, you are not well-equipped for traveling through the swamp. Also, there are way too many mosquitoes.

Go back
Pick up the toad

>>Pick up the toad

You pick up the toad. It has a wide mouth, lumpy skin, and small arms.

Put it back down
Kiss it

>>Kiss it

You kiss the toad. Nothing happens.

This toad is already a beautiful princess.

Put it back down

>>Put it back down

You put the toad down. It croaks and hops away into the bushes.

Go back

>>Go back

You return the way you came, except you now are covered in mud and rather itchy. After a while you reach a very old, gnarled tree with branches low enough to climb.

Climb the tree

>>Climb the tree

You clamber up the tree. Soon you are able to see most of the night sky through the taller boughs, though you are too heavy to climb all the way to the top on the thinner branches. Very conveniently—perhaps too conveniently—you know something of navigation by the stars. You determine the right way to go to reach the city, but also to return back to your house.

Climb back down

>>Climb back down

You climb back down to the ground.

Go towards the city
Go back towards your house

>>Go back towards your house

You begin to walk back towards your house. Soon, however, you hear a very loud stomping noise and many angry, hungry, deep-pitched growls. Due to your instinct for self-preservation, you determine that this is the Wrong Way and you have no choice but to head towards the city.

Go towards the city

>>Go towards the city

You take the route that you believe leads towards the city. For what feels like hours you stumble forward until you see some light streaming through the trees ahead of you. You have found the path again!

You step out from under the trees, extremely pleased. Maybe this night won't be a total disaster after all.

Suddenly, the shadow of long, thin, arms tipped with hooked claws reaches up past your own shadow on the ground.

Turn around slowly

>>Turn around slowly

You turn around slowly, the hairs on your arms on end. Standing behind you, silhouetted in the moonlight, is a creature resembling a mixture of a sloth, a gibbon, and a porcupine. It has long, tan fur, a small, flat head with large, staring eyes, and extremely long arms. The arms end in very large, curved claws. It is also covered in barbed spines, all of which are erect. It is the creature of your childhood nightmares: the scrufflus.

The scrufflus is normally a peaceful denizen of the tree tops. They swing slowly from branch to branch, relying on their venomous spines to protect them from predators as they enjoy a diet of leaves and sap. When especially threatened, they will sometimes teleport themselves miles away and (hopefully) out of danger, though there are accounts of them showing up in the middle of city squares or government buildings. The scrufflus is seen by some as a symbol of knowledge as they have a very intent stare and rarely ever blink. It is seen by others as being very creepy.

This scrufflus does not look particularly peaceful, however. It is making a very malevolent grunting noise and shuffling towards you on its stumpy legs.

Use your monster repellent
Offer it a potato
Run

>>Offer it a potato

You pull out a potato and extend it to the scrufflus. Maybe it's just hungry. The scrufflus swings at your hand, which you jerk back just in time. The potato is sliced clean in half as it falls through the air.

Run

>>Use your monster repellent

You pull the monster repellent out of your pocket and brandish it at the scrufflus. It snarls and takes a swipe at you, ripping four long gouges into your shirt but thankfully missing your body.

Use your monster repellent
Run

>>Use your monster repellent

You are shocked that your monster repellent had no effect. Instead you decide to throw the bottle at the scrufflus. You miss by a wide margin but the movement temporarily distracts the creature.

Run

>>Run

You sprint away from the creature. It howls after you in what you assume is rage. You are tired from all of the running and hiking you've done today but your fear gives you the stamina to keep going. You trip over a rock and drop your lantern. It smashes and the light goes out but you don't stop to pick it up.

Finally you stop, panting. The scrufflus is no where to be seen. You can see a clearing up ahead in the dim moonlight. Something large is in the center. You see it move, but can't make out any details from this distance.

Enter the clearing
Go back

>>Go back

You can't go back. It will find you.

Enter the clearing

>>Enter the clearing

In the center of a small clearing is an aged white dragon, although quite unlike any you've seen before. A fine coating of moss has grown upon her hide, and small white flowers bedeck it here and there. Her staff glows a soothing green from the vibrant life mana crystals embedded throughout its length. A tangled mass of flowering vines sprout from the wood nearest the crystals—the staff itself appears to be alive!

The white dragon raises her wings in a welcoming greeting, although her expression is one of deep concern. She beckons you to approach her.

The white dragon reaches out her forepaw and touches you on the shoulder, studying you intently. A rush of energy courses through your body and you feel refreshed.

After a few moments, the dragon lets out a sigh of relief.

"I am the guardian of this wood. Yet beware, traveler. There is a foul disturbance in my home, for the beasts of the forests have turned to vicious savagery. I am glad to see that humans are unaffected as of this moment."

"I dare not leave this clearing for fear the corruption take me. What would become of my beloved home then, if I were to fall victim to the scourge? I can feel it all around me, and the creatures of the forest have succumbed to it."

The guardian raises her head and looks you in the eyes. "However, in times of need, we dragons know that humans often find courage beyond what your fragile mortality would normally allow."

The guardian reaches to the tip of her staff, breaks off a small shard of life mana, and presses it into your palm. "Please see if you can find the source of this curse, and return to me. This trinket will heal your wounds should you have need of it."

Go west through a tunnel of vines
Proceed north toward the tallest tree

>>Follow a stream to the east

You've hiked across this stream many times on your way to the city, but on this cold autumn night, the gentle sounds of the flowing water are anything but reassuring. The trees here have thick, low-hanging limbs that zigzag over the stream, and moss-covered vines snake their way down into the water below.

Croaking frogs and chirping crickets are making their presence known, and you can scarcely make out the silhouettes of nocturnal orbweaver spiders spinning their webs to catch the evening's dinner. Thankfully the moons provide enough light to navigate by.

The guardian is pacing back and forth in the clearing, obviously stressing about what is happening to her home.

"Well, courageous one? Have you discovered anything new?"

She looks quite upset when you tell her you have not.

Go to the tunnel of vines
Go toward the tallest tree

>>Swing across the creek using a vine
As you grab the vine and prepare to swing across the water, you hear a loud hiss. This isn't a vine at all—you've grabbed the tail of a crested water viper

Startled, you stumble forward and trip over a stone, landing face first in the stream. The annoyed serpent slithers away into the undergrowth—luckily for you, you are too big for the snake to eat.

Wade through the stream

>>Use the branches as a bridge

The moss feels soggy under your feet, but you are easily able to walk across the thick tree limb. However, something brushes against your face—you've just walked into a huge spiderweb!

You flail wildly trying to get the sticky web and what feels like hundreds of spiders off of you, which causes you to lose your balance and fall off the branch. SPLASH!

Wade through the stream

>>Wade through the stream

The water is quite cold due to the change in seasons, and you really start to wish you'd brought waterproof boots with you. Luckily it's just a small stream instead of a raging river!

A glint of silver catches your eye and you discover a dagger wedged under the rocks. It's clearly been here awhile as quite a bit of rust has built up on the blade, but it's still sharp enough to use as a weapon or tool if need be.

Continue upstream

>>Continue upstream

As you continue along the sandy creekbed, a pungent odor begins to assail your nostrils. It is absolutely vile! The rancid smell is clearly increasing in strength as you continue along the water's edge.

>>Hold your nose and continue on

Suddenly something reaches up from the water and grabs your ankle! Startled, you lose your balance and fall, jerking your foot free in the process. Behind you, the water splashes loudly as a large figure emerges.

Standing over you is a huge river troll!

The troll gives chase and it is much larger and faster than you are! It will catch you in no time at this rate.

You brandish your rusty dagger and wave it in a wild motion, which looks woefully inadequate to stop a rampaging troll.

To your surprise, the troll stops chasing you and cowers, and even more surprisingly, begins to speak! It stumbles over its words—it's not easy to speak when you're a troll.

"I..I... I'm sorry. P...p...please don't hurt me. I am... I am... I am... a MAN!"

Run away some more
Talk to the troll

>>Run away some more
You scramble to your feet and run for your life!

The troll gives chase and it is much larger and faster than you are! It will catch you in no time at this rate.

Threaten the troll with your dagger

>>Talk to the troll

The troll becomes more confident with his words the more he talks.

"I'm Cyran, an apprentice merchant who deals in spell components. I came to gather bat guano from the cave upstream."

Well, that certainly explains the dreadful stench. Bat feces combined with river troll musk is quite an assault on the nostrils.

Ask Cyran what happened

>>Ask Cyran what happened

"It was a witch!" Cyran exclaims. "I was working in the bats' cave and she walked in behind me with a strange carving. I asked to appraise its value and see if she wanted to sell it. Well, she turned me into a... a monster!"

Cyran begins crying—at least you THINK that's what a troll crying looks like.

You do your best to reassure him that he may get better.

Ask Cyran to show you the bat cave

>>Ask Cyran to show you the bat cave

You're quite thankful that Cyran the troll is friendly, because everything else nearby is scattering at the sight of the hideous, putrid monster. There's not much that will bother you with a river troll as your "friend"! Alas, you don't have the heart to tell him how badly he reeks.

Cyran leads you upstream to a large rock formation with a gaping maw. The pungent smell of bat guano emanating from the opening is starting to overpower even the troll's putrescent stench. He points at the entrance, and quickly backs away.

A bucket of bat guano sits near the entrance to the cave. However, it's so gross you decide not to pick it up.

Enter the bat cave

>>Enter the bat cave

If you thought Cyran smelled bad, the odor in here nearly knocks you off your feet. Wizards have some very strange spell components, indeed. You hope that Cyran and his fellow guano-gathering merchants are paid well for enduring this experience, because no one in their right mind would want to be in here that didn't have a very good reason.

Since it's night, the bats have flown the coop. The cave is devoid of bats, but several bugs are crawling around on the floor. It is absolutely disgusting in here and you find yourself really wanting to take a bath.

Shafts of moonlight pierce through gaps in the rocky ceiling, so thankfully you are able to see.

Venture deeper into the cave
Go back outside

>>Venture deeper into the cave

You've found the headwaters of the stream, at least as far as you can see. The water appears to well up from underground.

From here, the cavern splits into two directions. The path on the left has a small pile of bat bones in front of it. The path on the right has muddy footprints—at least you hope it's mud.

Something cracks under your feet as you step into the darkened cavern. Several small pairs of glowing eyes react to the sound and quickly fix on you. An excited chittering sound fills the chamber.

You bend down and pick up a fragment of a dragon's eggshell. The fragment is deep purple and flecked with red—a Cavern Lurker egg! You realize you've stumbled into a nest—thankfully the parents don't seem to be home at the moment!

You decide very quickly not to venture any deeper into this part of the cave, unless you want to end up like the bats that clearly did.

Follow the footprints to the right

>>Follow the footprints to the right

The footprints lead into a large cavern with a hole in the roof. Brilliant gold and blue moonlight illuminates a natural pedestal formed from stalagmites.

There's clearly something on the pedestal, but you can't tell what it is as it is shrouded in a constantly shifting shadow. The grayish-red shadow itself almost seems to be alive, as ethereal tendrils lash out and touch the walls of the cavern.

Back up—that thing is scary
Approach the pedestal

>>Approach the pedestal

As you approach the pedestal, curiously the shadow begins to shrink away from you. The creepy tendrils lash out all about you, almost as if they are attempting to frighten you away, but they never actually touch you.

The closer you get, the smaller the shadow becomes, and you can start to make out an object on the pedestal.

Closer still, and the object is revealed to be a strange wooden totem bearing a carving of two pygmy dragons. A small crystal of gray mana, streaked with red, pulses at its center.

Grab the totem

>>Grab the totem

As soon as you touch the totem, you feel a surge of dark magic rush through your body. Images of savage violence flash uncontrollably through your mind and for a moment you feel as if you are going to lose control.

However, a vivid green light flares from the shard of life mana that the guardian gave you, and you feel the dark magic begin to weaken considerably. However, you can still feel the power emanating from the totem and know it's still dangerous!

As you're not a dragon, you don't know enough about mana to deactivate this thing, but you think the guardian will be able to help you. You quickly put the carving in your pocket and hurry to leave.

Head outside the cave

>>Head outside the cave

To your surprise, there is no longer a troll standing outside the cave, but a completely soaked, bat-guano encrusted peasant.

"I'm free!" he shouts. "Thank you, friend! Now get that wretched thing away from me!"

Cyran grabs his bucket of bat guano and disappears into the woods.

You hold the totem out to the white dragon, who looks at it intently.

"What's this, now?"

The dragon pokes the totem curiously with the tip of her staff, and the eerie black glow surrounding it fades away. The guardian sets back on her haunches in surprise.

"I don't know what this is, nor what this could mean, brave one. However, I suspect it may have something to do with the strange happenings in the forest. Can you investigate further for me?"

Go west through a tunnel of vines
Proceed north toward the tallest tree

>>Go west through a tunnel of vines

The peaceful tranquility of the guardian's clearing quickly vanishes behind you as you step into a tunnel formed of tree branches and thick overhanging vines. On a normal evening, this would be a cool and inviting canopy, but now it feels encroaching and threatening.

Hundreds of fireflies are flitting about the canopy in a dazzling display, but they are the only light you have as the vines are too thick to allow moonlight to pass through.

Go back to the guardian's clearing
Follow the fireflies

>>Follow the fireflies

As soon as you step outside of the fireflies' light, it becomes so dark that you can't see a thing. It would be hazardous to go any further without a light source.

Maybe if you could catch some of the fireflies, you could take them with you.

Go back to the fireflies

>>Go back to the fireflies
>>Proceed north toward the tallest tree

The wind starts to pick up as you head into the oldest part of the forest. Here is where the tallest trees of the wood thrive. Normally it's peaceful walking among the giants of the forest, but on a night like this, the tall trees look ominously threatening.

The limbs of the trees creak and rub against each other in the wind, and the shadows cast by the spreading branches seem to try and grab at you as you pass.

Ahead of you, you can easily make out the limbs of the highest tree, an ancient regal moonberry. For some strange reason, this tree always has fruit on it no matter the season.

Proceed deeper into the woods
Go back the guardian's clearing

>>Proceed deeper into the woods

There's a natural path between the trees that's been worn down by the passage of the forest's inhabitants. However, the trees have started shedding their leaves and the path is covered with them. Dry leaves crunch loudly under your feet with every step, but that's the only sound you hear other than the wind and creaking tree limbs.

To your right is a narrow path that leads to a cabin belonging to Radigis, a local apothecary.

Head right toward the cabin
Continue north toward the moonberry tree
Go back toward the guardian

>>Head right toward the cabin

Radigis' cabin sits at the top of a small hill and is surrounded by massive tree roots. The old apothecary has quite an assortment of unusual flowers and plants growing in a small garden that he uses in his potions. Next to the garden are small beehives, but it's too dark and cold for the bees to be out and about.

You've seen Radigis before on your walks through the woods, and it doesn't look like he's here as his trusty pony and wagon are missing. However, you can hear a noise coming from inside the cabin.

You go to peek in the window, only to have a small wooden mortar and pestle thrown at your head!

You pick it up—it might be useful, and if not, you can give it back to Radigis later.

>>Open the front door

You fling open the door to the cabin, hoping to catch whoever is vandalizing Radigis' house!

Inside is a pair of Misfit Pygmies, and they have completely destroyed the place! All the furniture is broken, the shelves and cupboards are empty. Herbal components and broken glass vials are everywhere. The cooking pot in the fireplace is overturned, and the fire has long since gone out. Ashes and soot are caked all over the walls and floor.

You know Misfits have a reputation for playing pranks, but you've never known them to be this destructive!

You grab a handful of rocks from the walkway outside and start throwing them at the dragons to try and scare them away.

The pygmies nimbly dodge your projectiles, growl, and throw them back at you!

You duck back outside to avoid being hit, and broken glass bottles go flying out the door. These Misfits mean business.

Looking as big and tough as possible, you barge into the cabin and start yelling as loudly as you can to try and scare the destructive Misfits away.

The dragons pause what they are doing and look at you, then at each other, and back again. Both of them quickly assume an attack posture by showing their teeth, brandishing their claws, and spreading their wings.

These dragons may be small but they are clearly aggressive and your scare tactic has backfired considerably.

Run away!

The Misfit pygmies snarl and growl at you and you quickly turn tail and run for the safety of the garden.

As you run through the strange plants, an airborne glass jar whizzes by your head. It lands in a pile of flowers and somehow doesn't break. You pick it up and keep running, hearing the sound of breaking glass starting up once again behind you.

To your shock, when you approach the moonberry tree, it looks like it is diseased. Normally this enchanted tree is green and bears fruit throughout the year. Now it is bare and its fruit has fallen to the ground, rotten and black.

A purple Floret Wyvern is dejectedly picking up the rotten fruit, examining it, and putting it back down. However, even she looks unhealthy. Her normally vivid colors are faded, and her lush floral mane lies flat against her neck, almost as if it were wilted.

The floret wyvern does not speak to you telepathically—it seems like she wants to, but she can't. Instead of words, you feel a rush of emotions all at the same time—sadness, curiosity, confusion, and anger.

The wyvern stares at you intently, and spreads her wings toward you so that they cover you like an umbrella. Any further, and you'll be completely enveloped by them.

You feel like she's trying to put you at ease, but you don't know for what purpose! Is this wyvern trying to make friends, or is she ensnaring you like a spider would a fly?

The enormous wings of the Floret Wyvern quickly envelop you in a slightly unsettling embrace. Well, there's no running away now, but at least the wyvern's wings are providing shelter from the cold wind.

The wyvern looks down and stares at your pocket, then pokes it with the tip of her tail. As she does so, your pocket glows a bright green—the life mana crystal given to you by the forest guardian is reacting to her presence.

The Floret looks intrigued—she apparently can understand you, but cannot answer. However, she withdraws her wings and looks up toward the top of the tree.

The wyvern beats her wings as if trying to fly, but it's clear she can't. She looks back and forth from you, to the top of the tree, and back again.

However, before you can get more than few feet off the ground, the bark snaps in your hands and you fall to the earth in a flurry of dead leaves. The tree is weaker than it looks!

The wyvern looks amused at your predicament, and chirrups loudly in a sound that could only be described as laughter. However, she does seem concerned if you are alright.

You reach into your pocket and hold the life mana crystal up to the Floret Wyvern. The dragon smiles as if she's relieved to be finally understood. She wraps her tail around the crystal and your hands, but also uses her wing to pull you close to her.

The crystal flares a brilliant green, and before your eyes the Floret Wyvern begins to transform. The drab colors of her weakened state fade away, and she becomes vibrant and strong once again. After stretching her wings, the wyvern releases her grip on the crystal, and pushes it back toward you.

"Thank you, young one," you hear inside your head. "I am restored to my full strength again."

"Indeed," the wyvern answers. "Normally I would keep such a crystal in my possession for safe-keeping, but it would seem you have need of it."

You ask the wyvern if she knows what is happening in this area of the woods, since she seems to know about magic. She gives you an exasperated look, but answers your query.

"It's obvious to the magically attuned that the disturbance is at the top of this tree, which is my home. It must be removed at once. When I attempted to do so, my strength was sapped from me."

The Floret Wyvern looks insulted at your request.

"The audacity of you humans! Normally I would sent a pretentious sort like you straight on your way. However, you have done me a kindness, and so shall I repay one to you."

The dragon spreads her wings and takes to the air, then swoops down and grasps your shoulders in her talons. You are abruptly jerked off your feet and into the air. After a few moments, you are unceremoniously dropped onto a high branch looking into a cavity in the trunk. It's just large enough to walk inside.

"I don't suppose you've brought yourself a rope to get down, have you? Nay? Then I will await you here, human."

The branch you've landed on is so massive that you have no trouble keeping your balance on it. However, the view beneath you is still quite unnerving, so you do your best not to look down as you make your way inside the trunk.

The natural chamber is actually the remnants of a massive tree knot. This ancient tree certainly has its surprises. From the soft grasses and tiny eggshells scattered about, it looks like this room is used as a nesting spot for Common Pygmies when it's hatchling season.

In the center of the room is an amorphous grayish-red shadow that seems to touch nearly every part of this chamber.

In the center of the totem is a pulsing crystal of death mana from which the consuming shadow emanates.

Once again, the wyvern grasps your shoulders and you are taken for a rather brisk and unpleasant ride before being dumped rather roughly at the base of the tree. To the Floret's credit, she seemed rather uncomfortable carrying you with the dark totem in your possession.

You consider asking the wyvern to carry you to the guardian's clearing, but decide against it.

Although a lot of these bones seem quite old, some of them are clearly fresh. A rotting scrufflus carcass is half in and out of the water, rapidly decomposing due to the moisture. Even though it's dead, it still gives you the chills.

The nearly complete skeleton of a large dragon sits on the shore, and it looks remarkably undisturbed compared to the rest of the bones in this chamber.

As you approach the dragon skeleton, it suddenly starts moving! The jaw opens and a thunderously loud yawn fills the chamber. You cover your ears as massive red and black leathery wings stretch out from the creature's spine and block your exit from the chamber.

"What are you doing here, human? You are trespassing in my domain."

The dragon's tone doesn't sound threatening, but he does sound annoyed that you have awakened him. You can see that he is a very old dragon, as his bone exoskeleton is so nearly complete that you mistook him for a skeleton altogether.

You're quite astonished that two dragons so different could be attracted to one another, but don't say so. However, apparently your jaw dropped because the Black Marrow laughs again.

"Is it so hard to believe? We are two sides of the same coin. Life does not exist without eventual Death. In the same way, Death without Life is merely nothingness. She protects those whose time remains, and I care for those whose time has passed them by. We are not in conflict, but in harmony."

You tell him that his mate finds the occurrences to be unnatural and that she asked you to find out what is going on.

"I am not attuned to the life of the forest as she is. I only feel when part of it passes away. Yet I will lend what aid I can in this endeavor."

With a furious roar, he spreads his wings and swings his armored tail with all his might straight into the thorns to smash them. Surprisingly, his tail passes straight through the menacing-looking barbs. The dragon staggers off-balance for a moment as he expected an impact, but quickly regains his composure.

As you enter the clearing and move closer to the shadowy figure, it notices your presence and turns to face you, revealing a prideful-looking woman with flowing red hair tinged with orange. She is adorned in an asymmetrical robe patched together with varied fabrics, and a pointed hat adorned with unusual carved charms.

You're not quite sure of her age just by looking at her, but her vivid eyes are unnerving. Though facing you, you aren't entirely sure if she's looking at you or through you, talking to you or to herself.

"So it is you who has been interfering with my totems. No, no no no, that just won't do. It won't do at all. I won't be able to distract the guardian if you keep this up.

"I'm going to have to do something about this, won't I? Yes, yes, but what about... Perhaps I could... Oh—that just might work."

She reaches towards her necklace—an intricate weave of twine and gems—and grabs one of the many jewels. The gem emits a brilliant orange light, too bright for you to stare directly at. You hear a loud crackling noise as energy from the crystal streaks towards you. You put your hands up instinctively...

...and when you lower them again, you realize you are no longer in the clearing. But where are you? It takes a moment for your eyes to adjust from the bright light of the teleportation spell, but even after a minute it's still dark, too dark for you to be outside. You see what appears to be some natural light in the distance—far from enough to make out your surroundings—broken up by what appears to be bars.

You fumble through your pack for the jar of fireflies from earlier. Though their erratic movements don't cast very stable light, you are able to make out the stone walls of an underground cave. The presence of actual light also confirms your suspicion—you've been teleported into a makeshift prison constructed of wooden bars. That complicates things.

At the edge of your light, beyond the bounds of your cage, you think you see something move.

As you start to trace the (not very large) perimeter of your current accommodation, you don't find much. Whoever sent you here was obviously not one for hospitality. The bars provide no obvious exit, and there's not much beyond some dirt floors. In one corner of the cell you find an old chess piece - perhaps the previous denizen of this cell enjoyed the game.

At least there's no skeletons. You find some small comfort in that.

Peering through your bars of your prison, you see that you are not the only inhabitant of this cave. Another cell sits only a few feet from the edge of yours. Though it appears to be about the same size as your cell, the creature inside this other prison is much bigger than you. And much furrier. And, well, more bear-like. It appears to be a bear.

It also appears you have attracted its attention.

Call out to the bear

>>Call out to the bear

It takes you a moment to decide what sort of greeting is appropriate when addressing an ursine creature. Do brown bears use a different honorific from black bears? It's too dim to really tell which kind you're looking at.

As you stand there pondering with what you can only assume is a blank stare on your face, you hear a voice.

"Hello there!"

...Did the bear just speak?

"Over here. Yes, here. You're looking right at me." The bear waves. Mildly shocked, you wave back without thinking.

"Ah, it's good to have company. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Steve. I appear to be a bear, as you can see, but don't let that intimidate you. I'm actually a real person. It turns out getting lost in the woods and eating some honey you found outside a strange hut is a bad idea? I'm not exactly sure on the specifics, but here I am."

>>Ask Steve to help you break out

You ponder aloud why Steve hasn't snapped the tiny wooden bars and broken free yet. Perhaps they're magical?

Steve puts his paw on his chin.

"You know, I hadn't thought of that. I'm, uh, new at this whole 'being a bear' thing. It takes some getting used to."

He shifts his weight and lumbers onto his hind legs.

"Do I just, like, hit them, or...?"

The bars of his cell splinter as Steve lunges forward and swipes at them. As you had thought—no match for a bear. He follows up by making quick work of your cell. You leap back to avoid becoming collateral damage as they crash down.

"Well, I suppose we should go? Maybe I'll try this bear thing for a while."

You follow him out of the cave, and he wanders off into the brush.

Freedom at last. You were only in that cave for a short amount of time, but somehow the fresh autumn air feels even fresher after your short stint with captivity.

You start to lose track of whether or not you've seen a tree with that particular shape before or if it's just your mind playing tricks on you.

After what seems like walking for too long with too little action, you find yourself approaching the mouth of a cave. A cave that you believe you have seen before. One that, perhaps, has a recently-escaped-from prison cell inside.

Steve is sitting outside the cave.

"Oh, hello again. Have you just found this freaky circle path that leads right back to the cave too? Feels like I've been wandering for hours, but I keep coming right back to the cave. I think I'm going to go back in and lie down and wait for this all to blow over."

Your cousin's art has some sentimental value, but desparate times call for desparate measures. You light the painting on fire and place the lit painting at the base of several of the bars of your prison.

Miraculously, the fire does spread to the bars. The amount of smoke is almost unbearable, and you realize that if this doesn't work fast enough it will likely have dire consequences.

Eventually the wood does weaken enough that you are able to push the bars out of place and slip past.

You leave the cave, passing what appears to be a sleeping bear in the process. Perhaps best to let sleeping bears lie.

After a few minutes, you come to consider that you may have acted a bit recklessly. It's dark, your only source of light is a jar of fireflies, and you don't even know what you're looking for. You're pretty sure you've been moving directly away from the path, but that's about it.

As you pass by the aforementioned stream, you notice a bucket caught on some rocks. Staying hydrated is always important, so you grab the bucket and fill it with water.

Due to the passage of time during your wild adventure, the temperature has steadily dropped. Thick fog has begun to roll in, cloaking the trees in a eerie blanket of misty moonlight and making it much more difficult to navigate. The fog dampens the surrounding sounds of the forest, blanketing the forest in an unnatural semi-silence.

A large shadow flashes overhead, but due to the fog, you have no idea what it could be.

The wind becomes so strong that you can barely stand up, and debris starts flying all around you.

Suddenly a bolt of lightning strikes the top of a tree not twenty feet from you! The ensuring roar of thunder is earsplitting, and the force of the strike throws you to the ground. The struck treetop splinters and cracks, and you have to duck for cover as the treetop falls to the earth.

The ghostly form of a dragon rushes by you - you recognize it as a Shadow Walker. It runs through the fallen treetop and quickly takes to the air. As the Shadow Walker does so, a Storm dragon descends from above, conjuring potent weather magic between its outstretched claws. Both dragons begin viciously fighting one another in the sky.

Behind you, the fight abruptly stops.

Talk to the dragons

>>Talk to the dragons

The Shadow Walker disappears into the mist. He honestly looks rather chagrined to have acted in such a manner and would rather not speak about it.

The Storm dragon looks a bit miffed that you have interfered in the fight. However, she looks even more frustrated when you show her what she was fighting over.

"Why, that's nothing more than a human magic trinket. Who would dare to attempt to control dragons in such a way? We are the noblest of creatures and to treat us with such contempt is unforgivable! Why, if it was you, I'd eat you on the spot."

You assure her that you've been sent to stop the trouble and that you had nothing to do with it starting. Also, you are able to begrudgingly convince her to blow the fog away so you can find your away again.

However, you're quite concerned about the faded life mana crystal. Perhaps you should try and find the guardian of the wood and ask for another.

Head back for the guardian's clearing

>>Head back for the guardian's clearing

With the dissipation of the fog, it's much easier to find your way around and it's a simple task to get back to the guardian's clearing. You hope the guardian is there, since the last time you visited the clearing, you rather unwillingly went on quite the detour. Also, your mana crystal seems to have lost most of its potency, and you're uncertain of its ability to protect you from harm any longer.

As you approach the clearing, there is a vibrant glow emanating from it. You see the guardian standing there, yet there are no animals around her. Perhaps she's chased off the trouble-making witch after all.

Proceed forward

"I knew you would return," the guardian's voice echoes in your head. "You are quite persistent aren't you? Now, hand over all those totems you've collected - we don't want them in the wrong hands, now do we?"

You hesitate briefly before pulling out the totems - they've caused such trouble in the forest already.

The guardian seems to sense your hesitation, and makes a sweeping gesture with her forepaw. To your surprise, the five totems you've collected float out of your pocket all of their own accord.

"Don't be astonished, love. I wield great magic, and it's time for these to return to where they belong."

Give her the totems

>>Give her the totems

To your astonishment, the guardian's other hand opens to reveal a sixth totem - one of a western dragon.

"Thank you. You might prove yourself useful after all."

You're about to ask her what she means by that when the death mana crystal embedded in the totem emits a blinding flash. You raise your arm to shield your eyes from the glare...

==>

When you can see again, there is no white dragon there at all - only the same proud-looking woman you saw before. Another illusion! Also, you're not in the clearing anymore, but in a part of the forest that appears to be completely dead. The trees here are completely bare and black, as if they've been burned.

"You've been nothing but a hassle!" the witch snaps. "I came to the forest to gather raw mana for my experiments. The guardian of the woods, that meddling wretch, allows only dragons to do so. No amount of persuading her would change her mind. As such, I had to resort to more drastic measures in order to gather what I needed. I crafted all these totems and imbued them with death mana in order to cause chaos throughout the forest - if the guardian was busy attending to that, I'd be able to take all I needed without interference..."

The witch starts waving her hands about, clearly preparing to cast another spell.

"Why you... you... how DARE you! These were my best robes! I'll never get the smell out!"

You can't help but laugh at her, even when she begins casting another spell.

"I'll show you, you... you worm! I had initially just planned on turning you into a troll, but I have a better plan for you!"

Throw a stick at her

>>Throw a stick at her

You pick up a stick from the ground and hurl it at the witch. It strikes her straight in the face, and the magic surging between her fingertips flickers and disappears.

If she was angry before, she's infuriated now.

"You've wrecked my totems," the witch sneers. "All but one. I'll be putting it to fine use now!"

The witch grabs the last totem, murmurs a strange word, and the totem flares to life with the distinct shadow. She throws the totem at the base of a nearby dead tree. To your surprise, the tree itself begins to move and glow with an eerie flame- it's not a tree at all! It's an Omen Wyrm!

"Kill the human, my pet!" the witch sneers. With that, she grabs her necklace and disappears with a flash of light, leaving the glowing totem behind.

Maybe you can outsmart the wyrm and get the totem. It does seem to be attacking blindly without reason. Granted, you're not really too sure what you'll do with the totem at this point.

Whatever, you'll take whatever advantage you can get!

You dive straight at the shadow, noting that it does not retreat from you as you'd previously experienced.

You wave goodbye to the dragons and hurry into the city to join the fun!
