Pug Dog

# 349517

"A lot of dog in a small space." This phrase is fits the pug perfectly. They are spirited, loyal dogs with playful personalities. Their rambunctious natures make for goofy antics, which is one of the reasons that pugs are a popular companion dog. They can be headstrong if their owners are not firm with them, and they often become bored with their training due to their high intelligence. It is extremely important to be calm, consistent, and confident when owning a pug, or they will begin to display unfavorable behaviors.

Pugs are one of the oldest dog breeds, dating back to before 400 B.C., and are thought to come from Asia where they were owned by Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. Pugs eventually made their way to Europe, where they became popular with Prince William II. When he became the King of England, the pug's popularity spread to his subjects as well, leading to them becoming a fashionable breed for years to come.

Pugs are normally square and thickset, with round heads and short muzzles. Pugs' faces are marked by a slight under-bite and deep wrinkles, especially around the muzzle area. They have short fur and do not require much grooming, but they are often prone to colds and allergies. Their short snout contributes to breathing problems, causing their tendency to snore and wheeze. Their appropriate weight range is 13-20 pounds, but if they are permitted to eat more than they need, they will become overweight easily.

Ringtail
稀有度:不常見
# 349392

When the sun goes down in the American Southwest, the Ringtail comes out of its den to search for food. Ringtails look a little bit like small cats, with slender bodies and exceptional climbing skills. The fur covering their bodies is usually gray, but can range in color to a golden tan, and have big round eyes. But their most striking characteristic is the black and white striped tail that gives them their name. This fluffy tail is as long as the whole rest of their body including their head.

While Ringtails are carnivores, they have been known to eat fruits in addition to the small mammals, birds and insects they typically hunt. Considering their small size, they cover a fairly large area when looking for food, so they rarely stay in the same den for more than a couple days. They'll make almost anything into a den, from a crack in a rock to a hollow tree. Ringtails are extremely agile and can climb almost vertical surfaces when searching for food or a safe place to sleep.

Solitary by nature, Ringtails find each other for the short breeding season around April. Typically 2-4 babies are born about 45-50 days later, fuzzy, blind and helpless. The babies open their eyes close to a month later and by the time they're four months old they look identical to the adults, only smaller.

Although historically Ringtails have been hunted for their fur, their pelts are not considered to be very valuable, so thankfully the populations of these cute creatures thrive.

Spirit Of The 1910s
稀有度:點擊特有
# 341416

The 1910s were a decade of tense international relations. The beginning and end of the Great War (now called World War I) was during this time period, and it was an event the world had never seen before.

But it was also a time of great advances in science and safety, even though it came at the cost of human lives. Immigrant women and girls who worked at garment factories in New York City had just finished striking for better working environments, better pay, and the option to unionize. Many factories caved, but one didn't: The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. In March of 1911, a pile of fabric caught fire on the 8th floor, trapping the workers on the 9th floor. Elevators filled up, the fire escape fell apart, and eventually women jumped from the windows to escape the blaze. Almost 200 people, mostly women and teenage girls, died in the fire. The fire lead to new factory regulations, regular inspections, and the American Society of Safety Engineers was created. It still exists to this day.

In 1911, another advance was made, but this time in science. A pair of scientists named Ernest Rutherford and Niels Bohr studied the atomic structure. Rutherford figured out atoms had a positive nucleus surrounded by a cloud of negative electrons. Bohr explained how this atom moved. This model is known as the Rutherford-Bohr model and is still taught today.

One of the most famous tragedies occured during this decade. On its maiden voyage, on April 15th 1912, the RMS Titanic, a supposely unsinkable luxury liner, struck an iceburg and sank, taking the lives of around 1,500 men, women, and children, who drowned or froze to death in the frigid north Atlantic waters. The ship was lost until 1985, when the wreckage was redicovered off the coast of Newfoundland. Since then, many more expeditions have been manned to the wreckage of the Titanic.

The Great War ended in 1918, but the carnage had only begun. A new disease sprung up at a military base in Kansas, killing hundreds of men in mere hours. An autopsy revealed it was a new strain of flu, more deadly than any flu seen before. The flu quickly spread to the rest of the US and the world. When the pandemic was over, 50 to 130 million people were dead worldwide. 500 million had been infected total.

Spirit Of The 1920s
稀有度:點擊特有
# 344306

The 1920s in America were a decade of opulence. They emerged from the Great War (World War I) with a remarkably intact economy. With factories now switched from wartime efforts to consumer goods, consumerism paired with the new idea of "credit" and rampant loans created of culture of material needs. But change was on the horizon. In 1920, after months of women protestors striking in front of the White House for their right to vote, President Woodrow Wilson signed the 19th Amendment of the US Constitution, granting women of the US the right to vote.

Up north in 1925 Alaska, a diphtheria epidemic started a 637 mile dog sled relay from Nome to Nenana to retrieve the lifesaving serum to cure the disease. In February, Balto the husky and his team bring the antitoxin to Nome, saving the children from the disease.

Back in the mainland, a decade-long era of freedom for women has begun. Women start to wear more "androgynous" dresses that hang on their bodies, bobbing their hair, adorning themselves in pearls, and dancing wildly to the most popular music of the day; jazz. They are known as the flappers and they become the icon of breaking female gender roles in the early 20th century.

Feeding into consumerism, everyday people begin taking part in the stock market. Soon, the stock market is the biggest financial craze in America, and ticker tape machines are a common item in households that gamble with the stock market. But all good things must come to an end. After years of unregulated trading, unsavory practices by banks, excessive borrowing, and credit run amok, the stock market crashes in 1929. Millions of dollars disappear in mere minutes. The event sets off a 10 year long economic depression, costing millions of jobs and triggering one of the greatest environmental disasters US history.

Sugar Glider
稀有度:限定品種
# 369712

The Sugar Glider, whose scientific name, charmingly (and oddly) means "short-headed rope-dancer", is a small arboreal gliding possum - a type of marsupial. Native to Australia like the majority of modern marsupials, their name came from early bushmen, who found they liked sweet things like honey and sugar, and from their ability to glide between trees. Generally silvery blue-grey in colour, with a dark stripe on their backs , they are very lightweight (100 to 160g or about 5 ounces), and their body size is about the same as the length of their fluffy tail. The gliding membrane (a very thin skin) extends from the fifth finger to the ankle - by spreading out this membrane they can glide distances of 50 to 100 meters from tree to tree, using their long bushy tail for stability and steering as well as "tilting" of the left or right membrane, and land successfully on their outstretched feet. It is thought that Sugar Gliders live for 9 years in their natural habitat - longevity in captivity is still being researched.

The Sugar Glider makes a variety of noises ranging from a shrill yap (predator is near), a sharp shriek (when fighting), to a "gurgling chatter" when in their nest. Found where there is plenty of rainfall (both cool and tropical climate) in wet and dry forests and woodland, usually with acacia gum plants about, as wild Sugar Gliders feed on the gum and sap from acacias and eucalyptus as well as a range of arboreal insects. This feeding and foraging takes place after dusk. Sugar Gliders are most active at night, and during the day sleep in nests made of leaves in tree-hollows. Anywhere from 7 and 12 gliders share these nests, possibly to help keep themselves warm by sharing body heat. Another way they can conserve heat, when food is scarce or temperatures plummet, is to go into a Torpor (a form of mild hibernation, where their body temperature drops down close to the air around them). They are playful amongst their own "clan" group but will fiercely attack any intruder whether it be another Sugar Glider or a totally different animal. Dominant male Sugar Gliders will scent-mark other clan members as well as the territory around their nests.

Veiled Chameleon
稀有度:常見
# 350220

A true Old World chameleon - as opposed to the New World anoles commonly known and sold under that name - the Veiled is one of the most popular and successfully-kept pet lizards. Readily propagated in captivity (they are able to reproduce at four to five months, when they have reached a body size of 8 to 12 inches, roughly half their full adult size), breeding may occur up to three times a year, and females change colors within 18 hours of a successful mating - talk about convenient for the breeder! Egg laying occurs between 20 and 30 days after mating, with clutch sizes ranging from 35 to 85 eggs. The white, oval, tough-skinned eggs are buried in warm sand in their natural habitat. Veiled chameleons are native to Yemen and southern Saudi Arabia, and reside in an amazing variety of different habitats. They can be found in the dry plateaus, mountains, and river valleys, and are arboreal - preferring to live in trees, bushes, or shrubs. They prefer temperatures of 75 to 95F (24 to 35C) and can be found in elevations up to 3,000 feet (914 m).

Veiled chameleons are brightly colored, with a casque (a helmet-like ridge on top of their heads) which is only a tiny swelling in a hatchling, but grows to two inches (5 cm) in height as the animal matures - considerably larger in the male, who is also substantially bigger and slimmer at maturity. As hatchlings, they are usually a pastel green, but as they develop they acquire bold bands of bright gold, green, and blue, mixed with yellow, orange, or black, that circle their body. The males are usually more strikingly colored than the females, who are usually green mottled with shades of tan, orange, white, and sometimes yellow.

Old-World chameleons are specialized tree-living lizards that feed almost exclusively on insects. Their bodies are flattened from side to side, and more or less leaf-shaped. They remain still and concealed for long periods of time and wait for their prey to come near. When they move, they do so slowly, and rock their bodies from side to side like a leaf in the wind. Their eyes move independently, and can look in two directions at once, as well as swivel nearly 180 degrees. They are therefore able to look in any direction, and even follow moving objects, without turning their heads or shifting body position. When a prey animal is spotted, both eyes will focus on the insect in order to perceive depth, and their famous long, sticky tongue flicks out to capture dinner.

While chameleons are famous for their ability to change color, the changes are not just for camouflage. Veiled Chameleons are highly aggressive and solitary animals, and very territorial...even males and females only associate during breeding. Although chameleons at rest tend to assume colors similar to their surroundings, color change is most often used to signify emotional state. Many chameleons are green or brown at rest, but can become far more brightly colored when frightened, courting, or defending a territory against another chameleon. Veiled chameleons, when startled or threatened, may darken in color and "play possum".

Not presently listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the Veiled Chameleon is the most common species of its genus in the pet trade. Their popularity is due to a number of factors - Veiled Chameleons are relatively hardy, large, beautiful, and prolific, and because they are found in a variety of habitats naturally, the species is tolerant of temperature and humidity extremes, which contributes to their hardiness in captivity. However, wild chameleons are frquently captured and sold for rituals and souvenirs. (For example, some believe that throwing a live chameleon into a fire will bring good luck.) The growing demand by tourists for chameleon "souvenirs" puts pressure on chameleon populations. Like those of many other animals, wild chameleon populations are experiencing pressures from commercial exploitation and extensive habitat loss. Wild chameleons are particularly sensitive to the problems associated with habitat loss because many chameleon populations have evolved in small, often isolated pockets and are unable to relocate.

Virginia Big Eared Bat
稀有度:限定品種
# 241260

At 3 1/2 to 4 inches in body length, the Virginia Big-Eared is considered a medium-sized bat, and is brownish with beige underparts. Their most distinct features are of course their ears; 25% as big as the rest of their bodies, along with the two glands on top of their muzzle, which can be mistaken for part of their nose. They live in isolated colonies in Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina, preferring limestone caves deep in hardwood forests. Females group together in early spring to gestate and have their single babies, which are born in May and grow quickly, reaching independence in only about two months - no one is quite sure where the adult males go during this period.

While like all insect-eaters Virginia Big-Eared Bats are at risk from pesticide contamination, the largest threat to these animals is accidental - humans' fondness for exploring caves. This disturbs the bats, especially during hibernation, causing them to lose stored fat reserves and die. If pregnant females are disturbed, they can lose their young. As the populations are already small and fragile, it will not take much to tip them over the edge into extinction...in North Carolina last year, for example, only five bats were sighted. They are currently listed as Endangered in the federal register, and were placed there in late 1979.
